With so many popular 1980’s and 90’s properties getting cinematic reboots, could the beloved Back to the Future series be next?
Robert Zemeckis, the director of all three Back to the Future films recently sat down with The Telegraph and was asked if he would ever consider signing off on a remake. “Oh, God no,” he says. “That can’t happen until both Bob [Gale, co-writer] and I are dead. And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.” The interview notes that he and Gale have the final say on any future BTTF-related film, as per their original contract in 1984.
“I mean, to me, that’s outrageous, Especially since it’s a good movie. It’s like saying ‘Let’s remake Citizen Kane. Who are we going to get to play Kane?’ What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?” Zemeckis and Gale rejected the notion of even writing a fourth Back to the Future movie. This really doesnt surprise me one bit. I wish more directors/creators would put their foot down like Zemeckis. Thoughts?
