Get ready fanboys, it’s about to get real up in here!
The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal has landed the role of the Punisher the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil. Marvel made the announcement Tuesday and it sounds like a lot of details are being kept close to the vest at the moment. But from what we understand, Bernthal will have what is said to be a “big presence” on the series.
In the comics, the Punisher (a.k.a. Frank Castle) is a vigilante who aims to clean up New York’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary. Frank Castle is a U.S. military veteran and martial arts master who is an expert with a variety of weapons. He loses his family due to mob violence which pushes him over the edge. What distinguishes him from other Marvel crime fighters is that he will use lethal force on criminals. While carrying out his vigilante endeavors, Castle has crossed paths with several other famous crime-fighters, most notably Spider-Man and Daredevil. These encounters have resulted in his incarceration. While he is known to be significantly inferior to Daredevil in hand-to-hand combat skills, Punisher has been rated as one of the most dangerous criminals alive.
I am a huge fan of this decision because Bernthal is a great actor who has had some SOLID supporting cast roles on TNT’s Mob City, Wolf of Wall Street and Fury. However he is perhaps most known as playing Shane for two seasons on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Mind you, on the big screen we have seen three actors portray The Punisher – Dolph Lundgren (1989), Thomas Jane (2004) and Ray Stevenson (2008). I can see Bernthal bringing something special to the character that we haven’t seen yet on screen.
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences,” Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said. “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
Daredevil will return to Netflix in 2016 with new show runners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. They replace Steven DeKnight, who was a huge fan of Punisher.
