Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake

Yeah, you read the title right. Following the success of “San Andreas,”  Dwayne Johnson is in negotiations to star in a remake of ’80s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” for 20th Century Fox.

It seems that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning a script with Johnson and his producing partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia on board to produce through their 7 Bucks Entertainment banner.

The original “Big Trouble in Little China” (1986) is a certified classic in my mind and is probably one of my favorite movies. It starred Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle between warring clans. Jack helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang’s green-eyed fiancee from bandits in San Francisco’s Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan. It was directed by John Carpenter and although it was not a huge commercial success at the time, it has gone on to have a huge cult following over the years.

It’s no secret that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is THE Hollywood go-to action star right now. With top grossing movies such as San Andreas and Furious 7, it’s really no wonder why. Don’t get me wrong I love the Rock, i’ve followed him all the way back when he first started wrestling in the WWE. I mean he still the most electrifying man in sports and movies today! He has made some solid and entertaining movies throughout the years that I absolutely love. BUT….

I don’t think they should touch this movie. I’m sorry but it’s a work of art, from the acting to the practical effects – it just had a real charm about it and was truly a product of its time. I hate remakes and I despise reboots. I’m sick of seeing franchises that I loved as a child just getting dismantled and destroyed. So why do movie studios do this? Remakes/reboots ensure easy money, because it’s guaranteed that the name will draw people in theaters. I will admit there are ways of making a good remake/reboot all while staying faithful to the original. But most of the time the remake/reboot pails in comparison to the original anyways.  They’d be better off doing a sequel with an older Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall.

We’ll see what happens, who knows maybe the Rock will do a decent job. It’s like Ol’ Jack always says… what the hell.
