Let’s travel back to one year ago shall we? Ivan Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, sent Amy Pascal (Sony Entertainment Chairman) an email about the second draft of the Ghostbusters 3 script and notes on the potential cast.Reitman was attached to produce and direct. Of course Sony got hacked and now we have the details on what could have been.
Not much is known the plot, but it would have featured Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) passing the baton to a younger generation of Ghostbusters. Sadly, a month after this email, Harold Ramis passed away. After that Bill Murray dropped out of the project and Reitmen stopped plans altogether for Ghostbusters 3 because of Ramis’ death.
Ghostbusters 3 would’ve been titled, GHOSTBUSTERS: ALIVE AGAIN. The role of ‘Chris,’ (who is listed as the son of Peter Venkman) Reitman was considering Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”), Charlie Day (“Pacific Rim”) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network). The ‘Chris’ role is kind of weird, because it was assumed that ‘Oscar,’ the son of ‘Dana Barrett’ (Sigourney Weaver) in Ghostbusters II would be considered or treated like Venkman’s son. Maybe he was left out of the script to distance itself from the last film, which wasn’t received as well as the first film.
The other male lead was ‘Jeremy’ who would have been played by Jonah Hill. Jeremy was described as the leader of the younger generation of Ghostbusters.
The female lead would have been a doctor by the name of ‘Anna, played by either Brie Larson or Anne Hathaway. Both had “expressed a strong desire to do it.”
The film’s main villain was named ‘Gniewko’ or ‘Eniewko‘. Reitman wanted Sacha Baron Cohen to play the part, but hadn’t approached the actor. Pascal had Will Ferrell in mind for the role, but Reitman didn’t believe he would be ‘effective’ as the film’s villain.
There were three other minor roles listed, but we don’t know anything about them except for which actors Reitman had in mind. For the role of ‘Ashley,’ Reitman met with Rebel Wilson. Lastly, Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari, were penciled in for the roles of ‘Joni’ and ‘Jon.’
