Jean-Claude Van Damme is set to return to Kickboxer, in a remake of the film that launched his career as an action movie star.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Van Damme would play the role of Master Chow, a kickboxing legend who teaches his pupil, Kurt Sloan, the art of the fighting style. If you are a fan of the original, you will notice that Van Damme played the character of Sloan in the the original Kickboxer movie. The role of Master Chow was originally meant for Tony Ja, but the Thai action star left the project over scheduling conflicts.
Van Damme would be joined by some familar faces that we have seen in comic book movies such as Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Alain Moussi (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Georges St. Pierre (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
Kickboxer follows the story of Kurt Sloan (Moussi) a kickboxing champion who seeks revenge against his brother’s murderer, Tong Po (Bautista). In order to defeat Po, Sloan seeks the fighting wisdom and skills of Master Chow, a legendary kickboxing instructor.
“We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation ” said Kickboxer co-producer Ted Field.
Kickboxer will be directed John Stockwell and will most likely debut in 2016.
